Memorial Day Weekend in Review

I love Memorial Day weekend, for multiple reasons. I love that it’s a 3-day weekend (for most!), I love that it is unofficially the start of summer, and I love that it kicks off camping and bbq’ing season! Usually we either go camping with my sister’s family (they still went), or we go boating with our friends (they still went), but this year, we stayed home and worked on our house projects. Seems like the story of my life lately, but it needs to get done. And it feels great to be making progress!

Memorial Day weekend is so much more than camping, boating, and bbq’ing, of course. I grew up in a very patriotic family, and I feel blessed that I have not personally lost any family members while they were in uniform. But many people have, and those are not forgotten. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

While this Memorial Day weekend was different than others we’ve had, it was still great to have Jeremy home from work for three straight days and spend that time together.

We started off Saturday with a scheduled tour of Redmond fire station #11. Talk about brave men and women in uniform! The firefighters were so great to host our FIT4MOM families and tell us all about their shifts, their drills, their gear, etc. The kids had a great time – Zara might have been a little young to take it all in, but she seemed to enjoy exploring all of the new stuff to look at.

The firefighters gave a great demonstration of their two-minute emergency response – from the moment they get a call to the moment they are on the truck and out the door. Fascinating!

At the end of the tour, the kids got goodie bags from the firefighters with coloring books and an honorary “Junior Firefighter” helmet. Zara has not kept the helmet on long enough for me to snap a pic, but trust me, she looks adorable in it! Our FIT4MOM group is collecting monetary donations and colored pics from our kids to put together a thank you package for the firefighters for taking the time to host us at their station. It was an awesome family outing!

During Zara’s afternoon nap, we got finished clearing out the remaining items in the Coug room. This room has been both our guest bedroom and Hayden’s bedroom at various times since it was painted six years ago. It has been an awesome Coug room, but it is time to change it up for the new baby. No after pics yet, as the room has only been cleared out and the walls have been primed for the new paint. It’s not very pretty right now, but here it was in its Coug glory:

Saturday night we enjoyed a family dinner with Jeremy’s side of the family to celebrate a birthday. Good bbq, complete with cheeseburgers, hot dogs, salads and watermelon. I had a little bit of everything. The dessert was an amazing new favorite of ours – fudge brownie topped with ice cream and caramel or chocolate sauce. We have since bought the ingredients to have on hand at our house now! Yum.

Sunday and Monday were pretty similar in what we did – morning play time with Zara, and she got to go to Home Depot with Dad (twice!) and to the grocery store with me. We have learned to capitalize on our productivity with her in tow – she is so much fun to take with us on our errands while the other one stays home to work. In the middle, she takes her nap and we both get stuff done together.

I am happy to say that Hayden’s *new* bedroom is just about done! The new carpet makes it so warm and comfy, his furniture has been moved and set up, and all of his toys and decorations have been moved in. Jeremy installed new shelves and I got busy displaying and arranging all of Hayden’s Lego creations and books on them. There are just a few finishing touches to do, so I will save the after pictures for that more detailed post! What a teaser.

So instead, I’ll share a couple of pictures of Zara’s opposite progress. While Jeremy and I are in complete “clean and organize” nesting mode, Zara is in her normal “make-a-mess and destruct” toddler mode. It took her two minutes to do this to her book shelf:

Silly girl! She keeps us on our toes, that’s for sure. We’ve got a great week coming up – complete with her 18-month check up appointment. And we are just one month away from baby boy’s arrival! Lots more progress and house updates coming soon! Summer is officially here in my book! Whoo-hoo!!!!! Make it a great week 🙂
